We all know the summer video game drought. It's that brutally boring season where nothing good happens in video gaming. At best, this is the time for two things: catching up on your backlog and hyping about the upcoming holiday releases. This year, though, I noticed something a bit off. Now that the drought season is coming to an end, I expected to see a slow build of AAA games coming out. Instead, the biggest thing I see are collections of existing franchises. Given, this isn't a surprising move for a company to make. If you have a successful franchise, you want to cash in on it as much as you can. What got my attention are the titles offering a new collection all within a short time:
- September 13 - Dead Rising 1, 2, and DLC
- September 16 - Bioshock 1, 2, Infinite, and DLC
- September 20 - Destiny and DLC
- November 15 - Assassin's Creed (The Ezio Ones)
I know 4 franchises doesn't seem like a lot, but look at those dates. Three of them are within just a few days of each other. And all of these franchises are ongoing. I understand the
Summer season can be hard on developers and publishers as well, but these moves seem a bit desperate. But anyway, they wouldn't keep doing this stuff if it doesn't work. I'm sure plenty of us will be getting our hands on some or all of these in the near future.
