According to the EA Q2 earnings report, the entire Sims franchise, stretching over multiple decades and several iterations and spinoffs, has surpassed $5 billion in lifetime sales. CEO Andrew Wilson expands on the game's success, revealing a plan to continue with the franchise long term. Color us surprised.
"The Sims 4 also continues to be an incredible long-term live service with a growing audience. Monthly average players up are up more than 40% year-over-year in The Sims 4, and engagement across the franchise has led The Sims to surpass $5 billion in lifetime sales. The Sims continues to be one of the great franchises in gaming, and we have plans to bring new experiences to its amazing players for a long time to come."
Details regarding those "new experiences" were not revealed. They did suggest a plan for holiday-related content to be released in the coming months, which aligns with their previous Sims DLC habits. And it was previously mentioned that various EA titles will be sold on Steam.
The game won't expand everywhere, however. a previous investor call indicated that the Sims 4 will not be coming to Nintendo Switch due to poor consumer interest.
It sounds like we have quite a few years left with the Sims 4 and their expansions. We can only speculate as to when a Sims 5 might happen. And that speculation says "not soon."
