It’s the five-year anniversary of 2011, which was a pretty good year in games, if memory serves. The 3DS came out, the United States Supreme Court defended Video Games as protected under the first amendment, and Mass Effect 2, Fable 3, and Limbo were released. Yep, a great year to be sure… save for one tragedy that destroyed a company’s good reputation and put thousands upon thousands of gamers at serious risk and even ruined some lives.
I’m talking, of course, about Duke Nukem Forever.
...Nah, just fooling, it’s the PSN hack. It’s been five years since that royal eff-up, and while Sony has apologized and offered SOME forms of compensation, via the Welcome Back package, there were a lot of hold-ups on Sony’s end. So while Sony offered users two free games from a selection of greatest hits, the codes for these games oftentimes never came through, and even as recently as last year, people were only just getting invited to pick their prefered games.
But now? Now Sony has finally gone through with their word. So qualified users who picked their two games--from a list of games that are also five years old and exclusively for the PS3, I should add--have just gotten emails with the PSN code for the download. So if you haven’t gotten to try games like LittleBigPlanet (whose community is dead) or Rain (what now?) then congratulations: dust off those old PS3’s and give em’ a play.
So, this “officially” closes the book on the PSN hack, more or less. It sucks they couldn’t offer us something better, or at least this reward sooner, at least they finally got around to doing it… long after everyone had stopped caring. I wonder if this delay stemmed from pettiness or incompetence. Both possibilities are terrifying.
Ah well. Here’s hoping they don’t get the opportunity to try again.
