If you’re like most people, you’ve been hard-pressed to find a PS5, if you’ve even been bothering to look. The issues the console has had with scalpers this year has been highly publicized, as well as the ongoing issues with production, which have been caused largely by a lack of preparedness and the COVID-19 pandemic — but that’s not the only reason you haven’t gotten your hands on one. Because according to retail analyst firm The NPD Group, the PS5 is the fastest-selling console in US history: which means there’d be shortages even if it wasn’t the end times.
Exact numbers weren’t revealed, either in numbers sold or how much money the PS5 has actually made — likely because the NPD Group has been asked to be silent about those specifics by Sony. But we do know that, so far, people have spent $14.9 billion on games in the first quarter of 2021 alone: a 30% increase over the past year. It seems that even with the pandemic ending, people are still looking for stuff to do indoors.
Sony’s not the only one doing well: apparently, the Switch is also selling gangbusters, being the best-selling console in March, both in terms of money earned and units sold.
A good look for Sony, but it does mean that the wait for a PS5 isn’t going to get any shorter anytime soon.
