Games writer Jeff Gerstmann released an image of an email by Razer. The email, directed to developers, stated that they will be shutting down operations of the OUYA game store and the Razer Forge TV service on June 25, 2019 and that they will be terminating their marketplace agreement on May 25, 2019.
Dear Developer,
We would like to inform you that the Forge TV Games Store and OUYA service will cease operations on 6-25-2019.
This email serves as a notice of termination of the Marketplace Agreement, in accordance with section 9 of the agreement, with effect on 5-25-2019.
Thank you for the support which you have extended us these past years. It has been a privilege to have worked with you and to have had you as part of our community.
Best Regards,
The Razer Team
The OUYA was the talk of the digital town in 2012. An Android-based micro-console, it was Kickstarter's eighth highest funded console at the time, raising $8.5 million. Unfortunately, the console was widely considered a failure upon launch for the lack of worthwhile games available on the console. The creators discontinued the physical console in 2015, selling the software assets to Razer.
To speak frankly, the OUYA was a mess. It wasn't much better than a mobile device for games, except that it had a far worse digital store. All the same, it is a bit of gaming history and we take our hats off to it.
