Hey. Remember when I said that we were going crazy with Battle Royale modes? That this obsession was getting out of hand and it needed to be curtailed?

You ignored me when Paladins did it.
You ignored me when Battlefield and Call of Duty did it.
You ignored me when friggin’ Path of Exile and Battlerite did it.

And now we’ve done it. We’ve reached critical mass of Battle Royale games. We’ve officially hit rock bottom. Because late next month, players from all over the world will get the chance to “enjoy” a brand new battle royale mode for goddamn Maple Story 2.

You heard me right. The isometric 3D anime-inspired RPG is getting a battle royale mode, called Mushking Royale.

Now, Maple Story 2 isn’t actually out yet; it’s still in closed beta, and it goes through waves of letting gamers play it. The next beta wave happens next month, between July 18 and July 31, and during a two-day span in that time (July 20 to the 22) you can give Mushking a try.

It does everything you’d expect for a battle royale game, with a few necessary twists to accommodate the fact that it’s an isometric 3D RPG. You still go around collecting gear, but you also fight monsters to get EXP and level up, to give yourself an edge over your enemies. You’re dropped off on a random square, and you have to claw your way through fifty other people as the arena gets smaller. And if you manage to be the top dog, you even get some cosmetics for your trouble.

Look, battle royale modes are harmless when they’re just a little side-thing that’s worth a laugh, but can we agree this is still going a bit far? Do we really need this? Did anyone ask for this?

Wait, stop, don’t answer that. Because it’s probably yes.
