Alright, so, Assassin’s Creed is skipping another year, this one, which means that the next big Assassin’s Creed game will be released in 2020, which probably means it’ll be coming out for both next-gen and current-gen consoles. But the main draw to Assassin’s Creed games – since lord knows it’s not the story or combat anymore – is typically the setting, as each iteration usually takes us to a new exciting location and place in history… although, admittedly, it seems as the years go by the team is running out of actually interesting locations. I mean… seriously? Ancient Greece? Whose idea was it to just rip off God of War?
Well, apparently that guy got a promotion, because Kotaku has confirmed that the next big destination for the next big Assassin’s Creed game will be the Viking-covered north.
I’ll grant you, that makes sense. Given that Assassin’s Creed has just sort of given up on being a stealth game and is just a fully-fledged combat RPG, the snowy north is a good location for that kind of thing. And since every single Assassin’s Creed game needs boat stuff now (because Assassins and boats go together like cream and cheese, apparently), the Vikings are about as natural a fit as you can get. I dunno if you know this, but those dudes LOVED boats.
That said, we don’t really know anything beyond that. The information came from an Easter egg in The Division 2 that was confirmed by sources within Kotaku, and it just consists of a lot of Viking posters being hung around DC. So, not exactly the same as a gameplay trailer.
Still, for Assassins Creed fans, this is probably really good news. The series has gotten markedly better ever since Ubisoft decided to slow down development a bit, so this extra year will probably do this game a lot of good. Probably.
We can hope anyway.
