According to a Twitter thread posted by game director Raphael van Lierop, Nvidia did not ask their team for permission to host the game on GeForce Now, a game streaming platform run by Nvidia. In response to this discovery, they asked them to remove the game from their platform.
"Sorry to those who are disappointed you can no longer play #thelongdark on GeForce Now. Nvidia didn't ask for our permission to put the game on the platform, so we asked them to remove it. Please take your complaints to them, not us. Devs should control where their games exist."
Their position is entirely understandable. According to Lierop, Nvidia acknowledged the mistake, apologized, and asked if they'd like the game to stay on the platform. They respectfully declined.
"Nvidia admitted they made a mistake releasing without our permission, apologized, asked us if we'd like to stay on the platform, and we said, "not at the moment."
This news comes shortly after a rough start for GeForce Now. Having launched only a month ago, several big-name publishers, such as Activision Blizzard and Bethesda, have already removed their games from the service's catalog. The reason for the departure has not been made clear. But all the same, it spells bad news for Nvidia's game platform. Publishers don't abandon a platform for no reason, especially not so early on.
In The Long Dark, the player finds themselves stranded deep in the winter-stricken woods of Canada. With increasing cold, no food, and aggressive wildlife, they must do whatever they can to survive. Players must manage heat, calories consumed, fatigue, and general wear and tear to their equipment.
The Long Dark is still available on PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. Learn more about the game via the official website.
