One of the most iconic indie games released in the past decade, The Binding of Isaac, is a randomly-generated roguelike dungeon-crawler where you have to navigate a labyrinth of monsters, traps, and poop in order to… die in a chest? Become the antichrist? Be your own dad? The plot is a bit all-over near the end there, but that doesn’t really matter. It’s got a lot going for it, and the creator, Edmund McMillen, is finally going to build off that success by releasing another game – a “prequel”, as a matter of fact – that will bring rogue-like dungeon-crawling to the world of match-based puzzle games.

Say hello to The Legend of Bum-Bo (for real this time).

The plot is very simple. You play a floating hobo-baby with a bag of trash and a coin. Someone takes your coin and jumps into a hole, so you follow suit in an effort to get it back.

"Every dungeon Bum-bo enters will be randomly generated, and much like Isaac feature hoards of monsters, bosses, traps, puzzles and randomly chosen spells, so each run will be totally unique and each successful play through will unlock more items, trinkets, playable characters and more."

As for the gameplay, basically what you have to do is match symbols on your board to create a series of aggressive and defensive “attacks” to help you survive. There are also a number of epic spells for you to cast, but to do that, you need specific types of mana you earn through the puzzles. It’s not the most creative system out there, but matching it with roguelike mechanics and a unique paper-craft look will make it stand out among its peers.

We can expect it to release sometime this year for iOS and Steam, assuming nothing goes wrong. A Switch port will be ready the following year, if we’re lucky.
