The last-ever Nintendo direct specifically for the Smash Brother’s audience was last night, and gosh, it was quite the extravaganza. The creator of the game thanked players for their support and well-wishes, we got Knuckles and Tails costumes, and a closer look at how Cloud works in the final product. But, of course, while that’s all swell and neat, that’s not the real reason anyone tunes into the Smash Bros Nintendo direct--we’re here to see what new characters will be added to the roster, and last night, the final two DLC fighters were revealed!
Drumroll please…
Corrin! A...another Fire Emblem character. From Fates this time. Alright, no lie--that’s a gigantic disappointment, considering Ice Climbers are still a thing and there are some people here who would have paid good money to add them back into the roster. And even then, there’s no shortage of interesting Nintendo characters… why pick ANOTHER Fire Emblem character?
Oh, right. To advertise. Cool. Again, kind of a bummer, but if nothing else--they look hella fun to play, and that’s what matters, right?
Regardless, the second character revealed is far from a disappointment--in fact, you may find yourself a little too pleased at this reveal. Introducing…
The ‘winner’ (maybe?) of the European popularity poll, and placing top five in the US: Bayonetta! Now, this is a treat--Bayonetta as a franchise doesn’t exactly fit the aesthetic (or the age rating) of the Smash Brothers series, but her over-the-top fighting style seems to fit like a glove.
So, two new fighters, each one likely costing five bucks, coming out early next year. And with that, the Smash Brothers roster is finally complete. I guess that means Nintendo will start working on the next one… hopefully without Masahiro Sakurai at the wheel. The man’s a genius but he needs a vacation.
