After a very rocky launch for the Xbox exclusive, ReCore, it seems like the PS4 exclusives might be struggling as well. More specifically, The Last Guardian. The game looks very beautiful and clearly a lot of time was put into the graphics and the environment. Did they spend enough time taking care of the core elements of the game though? Reports have said that while the game is indeed visually stunning, the actual feel of the game doesn't match up with current games being released. Clunky controls, sticky movements, and irritating gameplay all definitely outweigh the beauty of the game at this point. It's been reported that jumping, climbing, and overall puzzling solving is a huge part of The Last Guardian. With that being said, movement and responsiveness tend to be pretty high up on the "important" list for this type of game. Seeing that there are problems with just the actual movement of the main character is very concerning.
Another major element of The Last Guardian is Trico, the main character's pet bird-dog. While communication between me and my two dogs might not always be crystal clear, gaming normally gets this part right. Trico is designed to have his own mind in the game, and the player must build up a relationship with him. That's really cool and I fully support that. However, it seems like the beginning of this game is like watching Ash Ketchum try to get his Charizard to listen. The player has to spend a lot of time just trying to get Trico's attention, and even when you do, he still kind of does his own thing. If they can clean up the weak points of the game, there's definitely a ton of potential. The game has been delayed back to December, so clearly they have some extra time to polish things up here. Hopefully time is taken to really iron out all the issues, and come December, gamers aren't left sitting angrily wondering why they waited for The Last Guardian.
