Just watch the trailer.
The story begins when ace private eye Harry Goodman goes mysteriously missing, prompting his 21-year-old son Tim to find out what happened. Aiding in the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu: a hilariously wise-cracking, adorable super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. Finding that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with one another, Tim and Pikachu join forces on a thrilling adventure to unravel the tangled mystery. Chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City—a sprawling, modern metropolis where humans and Pokémon live side by side in a hyper-realistic live-action world—they encounter a diverse cast of Pokémon characters and uncover a shocking plot that could destroy this peaceful co-existence and threaten the whole Pokémon universe.
…Okay. So. We knew that a Detective Pikachu movie would be the first big-budget Hollywood Pokemon movie. We’ve known that for at least a year. And we knew that Ryan Reynolds would be playing the iconic yellow mouse, as well. So none of this should have been a surprise. Heck, if you gave it some reasonable thought, a Detective Pikachu movie was sort of “logical” as a first Pokémon movie goes: the traditional Pokémon plot doesn’t loan itself well to the silver screen, while a kid-friendly sleuthing film provides a more traditional three-act structure.
And yet… here I am. Kind of… flabbergasted that this is actually happening.
The internet, of course, is blowing up over the news, and it’s not hard to see why. Everything, from the weirdly realistic but “not” designs of the Pokémon, to how weird it is to see Deadpool voicing a Pikachu, has people sort of in a disbelieving haze. But this is all too real, ladies and gentlemen: and summer next year, this… monstrosity will be out to the public.
And I’m absolutely going to see it.
