As you may or may not be aware, it was Pokémon’s 24th anniversary the other day, celebrating the release of Pokémon Red and Green in Japan for the Game Boy. As you might expect, the internet was awash with celebrations and tribunes, a new trailer was released for Sword and Shield to show off a new legendary Pokémon, and Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution was released on Netflix. But crowning the big celebration was a collaboration between Game Freak and Google, of all things, where people had the chance in earlier weeks to vote on which Pokémon was the best of the batch. A popularity contest, not unlike the one that Game Freak held before the anime was released that ultimately decided Pikachu would become the series’ mascot.
Well, the result of that voting was revealed the other day, and I’m sad to announce that the entire Pokémon fandom is wrong. Because through some sick joke or terrible error, it seems the majority of people voted for friggin’ Greninja, AKA, edgelord Lickitung.
On one hand, I get it. Not only is edgelord Lickitung a popular fighter in Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, it was also Ash’s “partner Pokémon” for the X and Y series, which many consider to be the peak of the anime on account of it actually having a plot. On the other hand, none of that matters because the objectively best Pokémon, Mawile, wasn’t even in the top 5 – not only for the series, but also in her own damn generation.
This is a farce and a failure and we should all be deeply ashamed for not voting correctly.
In any case, here are the “results”, if you can call them that:
1) Greninja
2) Lucario
3) Mimikyu
4) Charizard
5) Umbreon
Despite everything, at least we can be happy with the fact the electric rat itself, Pikachu, didn’t place.
