When Epic Games announced they were opening their own storefront, people guessed it was the start of something big, myself included. Those feelings were validated somewhat over the weekend when it was revealed over the weekend that Super Meat Boy Forever will be exclusive to the platform for one year, but if you thought the Meat Boy folks would be the only ones hopping on this bandwagon, you’ve got another thing coming: right now it seems developers are all flocking towards Epic’s new storefront… and away from Steam… at least, for the time being.
For example, Coffee Stains Studio, the folks behind Satisfactory, have gone completely traitor, pulling their game from Steam and exclusively selling it on the Epic Store, with no plans whatsoever to return to Valve.
Other games, like Rebel Galaxy Outlaw and Genesis Alpha One, have been more open-ended, and like Super Meat Boy Forever, only plan to give the Epic Store exclusive rights to their games for the first year: at which point, their games will have long passed their peak sales opportunities and they’ll have nothing to lose by offering it on a second storefront.
And of course, Supergiant’s Hades and A44’s Dark-Souls alike Ashen are also exclusively on Epic Store right now, although they both seem like they’ll get Steam releases sooner rather than later.
Steam has, so far, not reacted much to the news, but it is a slow-moving company and while this news is big, it’s not earth-shaking so far. Steam recently showed it was far more interested in enticing triple-A developers back onto their platform: so if or when the Epic Store actually steals one of those from under Valve’s nose, that’s when the panic lights will probably go off at Valve HQ.
Who knows? They might lose so much money they’ll actually have to make video games to survive.
Wouldn’t that be crazy?
