It can be pretty darn frustrating to buy a game at full price only to discover it’s gone on sale a few days later. That’s probably why a lot of people are eager to see the dates of the Steam sales leaked, so they don’t have to make that unfortunate mistake.
Steam’s solution for this problem was simply to encourage users to get a refund, if they qualify, and then re-buy the game at the new, discounted price. And for a while, the Epic Games Store had a very similar system… until recently, when they unceremoniously updated their client with a feature that takes the guesswork – and the busywork -- out of buying games on sale entirely.
Specifically, they seem to have automated the process: now, whenever you buy a game at full price and it goes on sale soon afterwards, you’re automatically refunded the difference in prices: so if it dropped from 60 to 40, your wallet would automatically get twenty bucks back. To phrase the Twitter user who discovered this new feature, this is an “absolutely mind-blowingly generous” offer.
The Epic Games Store vs Steam debate had slowed considerably in recent months, but I can see a power move like this getting more than a few people to give up the latter for the former.
