The Division is shaping up to be a pretty big deal, which actually surprised me quite a bit, as I can't remember the last time that anything with Tom Clancy’s name on it became a big deal… at least, in the world of video games. But when something becomes a big deal, that means everything that surrounds it also becomes a big deal--so, for example, when the game launched earlier this week and the servers were having a hard time keeping up, what may have been an annoying kerfuffle for other games turned into a huge deal. Perhaps not as big as when it happened for Diablo 3, and they fixed it relatively quickly, but still. A big problem.
In a similar vein, now that the game is launched and people are exploring infected New York, another question has started plaguing the minds of those within the division: when’s the DLC coming out?
The answer to that, as it turns out, is "sooner for Xbox One Players."
In a recent blog post, Ubisoft excitedly announced that it had scored an exclusivity deal with Microsoft, stating that the first two of the three planned paid expansions to The Division will be exclusive to the Xbox One for the first thirty days after launch. These expansions include the Underground, where players fight through the dangerous and loot-rich subway system, and Survival, a brutal single-player experience that intends to push even the most experienced players to the limit.
How big a deal is this? Not as big as the players are making it out to be, that’s for sure. Still, an annoyance for PC and PS4 gamers who might not want to have to sit for 30 days in the boring ol’ vanilla game while the Xbox One gamers clutter youtube and reddit with all the new content. Still, it is what it is, and Ubisoft has a certain quota of evil it has to meet with every launch, I believe.
Ah well. We’re still a ways away from the launch of the first DLC anyway.
