Ubisoft put those fears to bed recently, however, in a statement released to Kotaku:
“Avatar’s development has no impact on the team working on The Division or on our plans to continually support and update the game and brand for the long term. We’re proud of what the team has accomplished with The Division, thankful for our community’s dedication, and looking forward to sharing more about what’s coming next for the game very soon.”
While it’s good to hear it from the horses mouth, it was a little silly to assume Ubisoft would just drop a game with the release of a new one: not only is that not really characteristic of game development, it’s also strictly against Ubisoft’s whole “we only make things that can be turned into sequels” philosophy.
Especially since The Division is looking a lot like a new “type” of game, peers with Destiny (remember Destiny? No one does, now that we’re waiting for the sequel), that’s more like a platform for expansions than a typical, straightforward gaming experience. Ubisoft’s not going to give up on that anytime soon.
How exactly that ties into their new “philosophy” on limiting DLC to non-gameplay relating content is still up in the air, however.
