The Game Director of the Dark Souls series, Hidetaka Miyazaki, recently shed some insight onto the history of Dark Souls and what FromSoftware will be working on moving forward. In case you didn't know, The Ringed City DLC for Dark Souls 3 recently released, and it's the last instalment of content for the entire Dark Souls series. That's right. Dark Souls is officially over, and fans all over the world are morning its passing.
The Dark Souls community is a very unique and passionate one. As part of this community, I can speak for what makes Dark Souls so special. The Dark Souls series is truly one of a kind, and really can't be tied towards a certain genre. Dark Souls is almost a genre in itself, and no other game has been able to mimic or match the experience that Dark Souls offers. In a recent interview with Famitsu (translated), Miyazaki stated that the Dark Souls series is "completely done for now". He feels that even though they may never return to the series, he believes that the series is "blessed" and he couldn't be more right. FromSoftware is leaving the series, but they also made history with their work, and Dark Souls will inspire future developers for years to come.
The Dark Souls series has always been exceptionally received. Every title in the series has always been critically acclaimed, and never has FromSoftware left the community disappointed with any of their work. While it is sad that we may never see a Dark Souls game ever again, I think fans feel satisfied with the ending, knowing that they left the series on a good note. Miyazaki did say that FromSoftware is working on a number of new games, and they aren;t concerned about whether these new titles resemble the Dark Souls series in any way shape or form. I for one am extremely excited to see what the brilliant minds at FromSoftware have in store for us next.
