The Blizzard Catastrophe: American University Players Finally Get a Ban

Equality for all, ish.

If Blizzard hoped commenting on the “Blitzchung” issue and easing up on his punishment would somehow end the crap-tornado that currently surrounds them, they’re sadly mistaken. And it certainly won’t help if they, themselves, go out of their way to remind people about their past deeds, as they seem to be doing now.

If you recall, early in the controversy, the American University Hearthstone team decided to show their support for “Blitzchung” by holding up a “Free Hong Kong, Boycott Blizz” sign during an official stream. Interestingly, despite Blizzard saying in their follow-up statement two days later that they would punish anyone who was so disruptive during a stream, the American University team was never reprimanded, and thus, had to willingly drop out of the tournament in order to further protest Blizzard’s actions.

Well, Blizzard has now decided that, either because they want to look unbiased or they simply forgot to do it in the first place, the American University team should, indeed, get a proper punishment, and thus the team has been banned from pro play for six months.

“Every Voice Matters at Blizzard and we strongly encourage everyone in our community to share their viewpoints in the many places available to express themselves. However, the official broadcast needs to be about the game and competition, and to be a place where all are welcome.”

For what it was worth, one of the players, Casey Chambers, who tweeted the email revealing their ban, was less-than-bummed about the news.

Happy to announce the AU Hearthstone team received a six month ban from competition. While delayed I appreciate all players being treated equally and no one being above the rules.

Of course, it’s hard to know if it’s really “equality” or not – unless some player wants to scream something pro-china on stream to see if Blizzard reacts as violently – but it’s… technically good?

Sure, why not.
