The Banner Saga is one of those strange indie games that has a vivid art style, unique characters and an appropriately dreary setting that's also super well-liked among those who have played it… but is still forgotten about a lot. I mean, when you talk about indie games, stuff like Braid and Limbo still pop up, despite being seven years old, but The Banner Saga? The last time I heard any buzz about it at all was when the devs released a trailer, but that came and went like a fart in a wind tunnel.
Well, apparently the developers want to keep you from forgetting their IP long-term, so they’ve recently announced a new partnership with board game creators MegaCon Games to design a new Miniatures board game based on the post-apocalyptic Viking world. Called The Banner Saga: Warbands, what is known is that there’s going to be a Kickstarter for it soon (because of course they’d give it a kickstarter) and if you want to show interest in the project, you have to go to MegaCon’s GenCon booth, number 1449, to sign a sheet of paper.
I guess an online petition would have been too much effort.
Now, given that the Banner Saga was basically just an animated tabletop miniatures game, the transition to an actual tabletop with actual miniatures should be a fairly easy one—just add a few dice to replace the RNG generators and you’re good to go. And while that sounds nice, certainly, a part of me wonders if there’s anything new they could do with this… or how they could ‘advance’ the story from a Tabletop RPG.
Either way. I’m a little wary of all the spin-offs and such we’re seeing for a saga that’s only released one proper game in the proper main series, but… presumably, by the time this board game comes out, the second game will also be here, and we can have a better grasp of where the story is going.
So… if you’re into this kind of thing and you’re going to GenCon… you know where to go.
