Terraria Sells 35 Million Copies, Hits All-Time High in Popularity

The journey's end was just the start, it seems.

Terraria came out in 2011, which means its closing in on ten full years of existing: and while the game has had its final update (which added a bunch of cool stuff, as well as official mod support), it remains one of the most popular games out there, having long outgrown its original title of a simple 2D minecraft clone.

This has been illustrated in a new blog post made by the developers on their forum, where they not only celebrated reaching an impressive sales milestone, they also revealed that Terraria is officially the most popular game on Steam.

No, for real.

First, we learned that the game has sold gangbusters: they just hit 35 million copies sold. Which is pretty dang impressive for an indie game with basically no marketing budget. They even shared some specific numbers, which were fairly interesting:
  • 17.2 Million sold on PC
  • 8.5 Million sold on Consoles
  • 9.3 Million sold on Mobile devices
Anyway, that’s not the only cool news: apparently, Terraria has also beaten Portal 2 as the top-rated game on Steam. Mind you, the victory is by the thinnest of margins — both of them are sitting at 8.81 out of 10. But Terraria, apparently, edges it out, and sits neatly on the top of that list.

For Terraria fans, there’s not a whole lot to look forward to: Journey’s End isnt on consoles yet, and the only real new “content” we can look forward to is official Steam Workshop support, which is looking to be a ways away. But Terraria was created by a small team who supported it free for nine years: it’s one of the ‘good guys’ of the gaming world, and def worth celebrating.

...and playing, if you haven’t done that already. It’s really quite good.
