Terraria May have Mod Support Soon, Other News

With Mods, Terarria will quickly begin to feel like an authentic Minecraft experience!

Terraria! The Minecraft imitator who has, in turn, been imitated by others! It’s like a big, craft-tastic conga line of copyright infringement!

I kid. Terraria might be four years old (and, in the eyes of many, outdone by spiritual successors like StarBound) but it’s still kickin’, having recently gotten a new giant patch that added a plethora of features and an announcement that it would be coming out for the Wii U and 3DS. It might not be in the spotlight for long, but it’s still got a dedicated fanbase, and a creator who may or may not be willing to continue updating the game. In a recent interview with PC Gamer, Redigit—the game’s creator—had this to say.

"[1.3, the most recent patch] will be the last update that I work on personally so it is hard to say what the future holds. That decision will be left up to the team that continues to work on Terraria. We like the idea of switching to smaller more frequent updates moving forward.”

Smaller updates more frequently are good. However, with Redigit leaving the team, there’s going to be an unfortunate gap in development. Fortunately, the aforementioned dedicated fanbase might be able to help out with that.

“We have always felt that Mod Support would be the best final update to Terraria so that the community could keep the game alive."

Some other interesting tidbits from the interview: the current “Final Boss”, being the Moon Lord, will not be trumped—it will always remain the ultimate final boss, unless some mod changes it. Redigit will be working on another project before he works on Terraria 2 (which was something we learned about a while ago), so the sequel is a long time coming. There will never be paid DLC for Terraria (after everything that’s been given away for free, it would be odd to suddenly charge for it), and finally, if he had the option, he wouldn’t have done Steam Early Access, which… is great, I guess.

Terraria doesn’t get the credit it deserves, in my mind, for being one of the few Minecraft-inspired games that really takes things in its own direction—and paved the way for other games by setting out a basic template to follow. Well, regardless, it's good to see Terraria won’t be dying out anytime soon… and that it remains a great way to pass the time while we wait for Terraria: Otherworld.
