Terraria: Journey's End, the last major update to the hit indie sandbox game, has an official release date, and it's only a month away!

According to an announcement on Twitter by game creator and studio head Andrew Spinks, Journey's End will arrive on PC on May 16, 2020.

Terraria originally released on May 16, 2011. The open-world sandbox game featured a high degree of customization, interesting environments, monsters, and items, and an intricate building and crafting system. Furthermore, it was commonly seen as a friendly rival to Minecraft, but since its release, it's seen a number of minor updates, adding new features, bug fixes, and more.

Journey's End, as the name implies, will be the final major update to the game. It will be one of the biggest updates to the game ever, adding over 800 new items while also revisiting nearly every aspect of the game. It was previously explained as their opportunity to "flesh out the overall experience."

The list of all expected changes is too long to list here. Some highlights, however, include:
  • Expanded storage items
  • New top-tier weapons
  • Lawn Mower
  • Several New Pets
  • Shovels
  • Block Swapping
  • New Mini Biomes.
For a full list of expected changes, check out the wiki subsection about the update.

Nine years is a long time, especially in the games industry. 2011 is the same year that games like Mass Effect 2 and L.A. Noire released. It's a mark of both the development team's dedication and the game's success that they can still provide major updates today. In a way, it's good that this is the last one. They deserve a comfortable retirement. Or maybe they'll use the free time to start another game? We will see.
