For a brief time, it was the third most popular game on Steam.

We reported last week that the final update of the nine-year old game, Terarria, launched on May 16, 2020. Which, if you happen to have a calendar on hand, you’ll note was actually two days ago. Called “Journey’s End”, the update promised to bring a whole host of new enemies, items, and other content to the game that was at one point considered little more than a Minecraft clone, and the Steam page got updated with this moderately heartbreaking message:

“This update has been a labor of love, tirelessly worked on by our team over a good while, and we truly feel that it brings Terraria to the next level, to a place where the core game can finally be called "complete”… we cannot wait to see your reactions as you dive in to all that this update has to offer, and we hope that you thoroughly enjoy our gift to you. It has been an amazing journey indeed... but we truly feel that this end is really just a new beginning for the amazing world of Terraria.”

What’s more, fans have responded in droves: the day the new update was launched, Terarria hit an all-time record for concurrent player count, peaking at 489,886: that meant, for a brief window, Terarria was the third-most played game on Steam for the day, right behind CS:GO and Dota 2. I imagine that number will stay reasonably high in the coming days and weeks as players explore this final chapter of the game, and I’m certain this will make the fervor for a brand new Terarria – such as the forever-teased Terarria 2 – even louder.

For what it’s worth, the folks at re:Logic always deserved the success they got, and then some. To keep a game going for nearly a decade with nothing but free updates is a marvel, and I wish them luck in their next big project, whatever it may be.
