Tera Publisher En Masse Entertainment is Shutting Down

I'd make a "Closers" joke but that seems tasteless.

In news that’s only surprising in so far that I would have expected it sooner, En Masse Entertainment, the folks behind the Free-to-Play and fairly creepy MMORPG TERA, have just announced that after 11 years, they’re shutting down.

On Facebook:

En Masse Entertainment began more than 11 years ago. We started out as a small team, committed to making the highest quality games that we could. Along the way we built a world-class community, who showed nothing but love for the content and worlds that we created. Because of that support we were able to continue to build games that we are proud of with the best people in the industry.

Today, it is with a heavy heart that we begin the process of discontinuing the business of En Masse Entertainment. Our focus in the coming weeks and months will be on our team, helping them to find new opportunities, and on our games, to ensure a seamless transition for you.

If you are in the industry and are looking for the best talent, please email Eme.hr@krafton.com.

For those of you that are interested in Tera or Closers, there will be news in the coming weeks. Rest assured, support for those titles will continue.

En Masse was created specifically for Tera, as it was owned and created by the South Korean company Krafton Games Union to bring their famous MMORPG to western shores. En Masse certainly accomplished that with aplomb, but Tera long passed whatever heyday it may have had, and has struggled to maintain players in recent years. They branched out in the years since, with games like Closers and The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance Tactics, but Tera was always the foundation of their existence.

There’s no word on how many people have been let go as a result of this closure. But the fact that En Masse appears to need other developers to reach out to them bodes poorly.

It’s hard enough to lose your job normally, let alone in a friggin' pandemic.
