Tekken Producer Katsuhiro Harada has remarked that while tutorials are highly requested, they are seldom used. Which is why Tekken 7 will be opting out of a tutorial in favor of having the player learn the gameplay via story mode.
“story mode was envisioned on teaching the player with baby steps whilst playing the game.”
Katsuhiro Harada
While fairly common in other games, this idea is rather fresh in the fighting genre. While this will undoubtedly cause improvement through gameplay for a greater number of players, will the desire to teach conflict with the intention to storytelling? What about the players who care not for the story, but simply want to enhance their technical skill?
While I would like to say that this will be an interesting development to observe, in truth, this change will be very quickly accepted and forgotten. Harada is right after all - most people don't play the tutorial.
