Over the past few years, video game demos have slowly tapered off. Though demos still exist today, many developers backed away from the idea, as there have been reports of how harmful they can be to a game's sales rather than the presumed opposite.

However, demos are helpful for the consumer, because it helps the consumer gauge whether or not the game will be worth it. Without a demo, purchasing a game--especially on day one--is a total crapshoot. You have no idea what you're getting into.

Truth be told, the strategy sounds a bit deceptive, and if you ask me, quite a few games have failed to live up to expectations in the past couple of years, so despite the loss of sales, it's best to cough up a demo. Unless the game's demo is not at all representative of the final version. Nevertheless, there's also nothing wrong with releasing a demo post-sales. If you're the patient type, you should be pleased to know that Techland has officially released a demo for zombie parkour title Dying Light globally for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the PC.

The demo offers three hours of unique content spanning most of the Slums area. Players can explore and tinker with one story quest chain, a number of side quests, challenges, and random encounters. Better yet, the demo supports four player co-op mode.

Why the release of a demo? Well, blame the economic concept of demand. Quoting producer Tymon Smektala:

"With the demand for Dying Light still high after more than half a year on the market, we wondered what else we could do to help players decide which game to buy. Then we thought: demos were pretty much a standard in the previous generation, but suddenly they've become few and far between. So we decided to use some of our resources to release a demo now and let everyone experience our game first-hand."

If you love the demo and purchase Dying Light, then you should also look forward to a story-based expansion titled Dying Light: The Following, which will include awesome dirt buggies, a new massive map, and a new progression system. The expansion will cost $14.99, but Season Pass holders will obtain it free of charge.

In the meantime, the demo awaits you and so doesn't this uncut expansion gameplay video:
