Despite being over 13 years old, Team Fortress 2 continues to update. It's not all bug fixes and security patches, either. Their latest patch introduces a new holiday event. Get ready for Smissmas 2020!

Since 2013, TF2 has received a holiday update called Smissmas every single year. Based on Christmas, the event highlights the festive style of the season, but with TF2s traditionally wacky alterations. Every event introduces new community-made items and stages. They even have a digital comic book about fighting Santa during Smissmas.

What's New in Smissmas 2020

To start, four new community-made maps will be added to the game: Pier, Snowfall, SnowVille, and Wutville. They all are based either around winter or classic Christmas concepts.

There will be 20 new community-made items added to the game, each found in a Winter 2020 Cosmetic Case. It's random what items each case will contain, but every case will have a chance of dropping the Festivizer as a bonus drop. Anyone that participates in the event in-game will receive a Stuffed Stocking, which contains a randomly chosen gift, as well.

There will be 13 new War Paints, found within the Winter 2020 War Paint Case. Like with the cosmetics, it will be randomized. The Unusualifier taunt has a chance of being a bonus drop, however.

Speaking of taunts, there will be eight new taunts, also community-made, available in the Mann Co. Store: the Pooped Deck, Time Out Therapy, Rocket Jockey, The Boston Boarder, Scorcher's Solo, Texas Truckin', Spin-to-Win, and The Fist Bump.

A total of 19 new Unusual effects have been added to the game; 12 of them are for hats, while seven of them are for taunts. Any item or taunt acquired from a Smissmas case will have a chance of being Unusual (having a special visual effect). Instead of pulling from the normal list of unusuals, they will pull from the new Smissmas unusuals instead.

Bug Fixes

We know we said it wasn't all bug fixes, but there are still some of those too. They are as follows:
  • Fixed exploit where players could use "retry" in the console to reset the MvM timer and prevent the wave from starting
  • Updated item schema with community fixes from Andrés S. (rabscootle)
  • Updated web page with community fixes from Liam Stone (boba)
  • Updated Spy invis materials with community fixes from Liam Stone (boba)
  • Updated materials with community fixes from Andrés S. (rabscootle) and NeoDement to fix broken Jarate effect
  • Updated/Added some tournament medals
  • Updated the localization files
It's impressive to see one of the fathers of team class shooters still going strong after over a decade in operation. Even so, that won't stop me from wishing for a Team Fortress 3 this Smissmas.
