Take-Two Interactive, a major game publisher, has announced a new publishing label called Private Division. This new division will have an extra focus on indie games.
The new label will take care of Kerbal Space Program, for example. Take-Two acquired this game in May, and they have plans with other developers, such as Obsidian Entertainment, for upcoming titles.
Michael Worosz, senior VP and head of independent publishing at Take-Two, made a statement about Private Division:
We have spent more than two years laying the groundwork for Private Division, building an experienced publishing team and signing projects with some the most respected and talented creative leaders in our industry. We see a growing number of independent studios in our industry creating high-quality games based on new IP, and our focus is supporting these types of developers and projects, and ultimately bringing incredible experiences to gamers around the world.
This move was done not long after EA began a similar label concept known as EA Originals, which published games such as A Way Out.
This is a good example of how the definition of "indie devs" is perceived. When many hear indie, they think a small team making games from home. In truth, it only means that the studio is independently owned, regardless of scale. This is how Obsidian, a well-known name with a team of 170 people, can be considered indie.
