It’s easy to forget these things with all the other gaming movies in the works – from the triumph of the Pokémon movie to the terribleness of the Sonic trailer to the baffling decisions to have Illumination make Mario or to make a Tetris movie at all – but technically there is a Monster Hunter movie in the works. Written and directed by Paul W. S . Anderson, the fellow behind the bafflingly successful Resident Evil movies, there’s been very little we’ve known about it, outside the fact that it exists and a few photos that were leaked that simply showed a bunch of dudes in military gear. Still, initial expectations were and are low, as a lot of folks don’t care for Paul’s work and the photoshoots lacked Monster Hunter’s rather over-the-top flare.
But maybe there’s reason to have hope, because a recently leaked 30-second trailer for the movie shows us a side of production we haven’t seen yet… and promises a movie that’s far more on-brand than we originally feared.
Check it out.
Not exactly the highest quality, since it was leaked and unofficial, recorded on someone’s phone, but it’s clear enough to see a few important details: people wielding comically oversized weapons and wearing fancy armor. We see a shockingly on-point live-action version of the handler from Monster Hunter: World. We even got to see some monsters: what looks to be a Diablos and the iconic Rathalos. The only thing it was really ‘missing’ in those short 30 seconds was Palicos, but if they’re willing to go full-hog with the weapons and armor I don’t see why they wouldn’t lean in completely and include them somewhere.
We’re still a long ways from seeing the movie – it comes out September 4 of 2020 – and we’re probably still a considerable ways from our first ‘real’ trailer. But this puts a little smile on my face, which is good enough for now.
