The game originated as a simple remake. It used the Unity engine to give modern graphics and controls to a classic game. With the project's success, they made some changes. They changed to the Unreal engine and decided to make the game more of a spiritual successor than a remake.
CEO and founder of Nightdive Studios Stephen Kick released an announcement earlier today, contemplating how they seem to have strayed from the path. He also says that the studio will be put on hiatus until they can get things sorted out
"I have put the team on a hiatus while we reassess our path so that we can return to our vision. We are taking a break, but NOT ending the project. Please accept my personal assurance that we will be back and stronger than ever. System Shock is going to be completed and all of our promises fulfilled. "
The announcement as a whole sounds vague, but it appears to be that they will be going back to making a remake. It's unfortunate to hear that the team will be taking a break. Hopefully the delay won't be too long. We even listed System Shock as one of the 5 Games to Look Forward to in 2018.
