System Shock 3 is Still a Thing, We're Told

COVID-19 hasn't killed it yet

Yeah, we decided to drop the COVID Central tag. Mostly because so many stories are related to COVID-19 that it’s starting to become a little redundant. Press F in chat, friends.

Anyway, it’s easy to forget with all the other crap going on, but technically System Shock 3 is still a thing. This long-awaited(?) direct sequel to the critically acclaimed System Shock 2 has had a rough road since conception, ranging from delays to major layoffs at the studio working on it, OtherSide Entertainment. And now with the COVID-19 pandemic washing over the country, there are those who are worried this may very well be the death toll for SHODAN and gang.

However, replying to a two-month-old post in their forums, OSE_Walter has confirmed that the crew is still hard at work… if a bit “fragmented” at the moment:

We’re still here. We’re all working remotely right now, probably like most of you. Our new concept is coming along nicely and we are really excited about it. We have cool and we think distinctive art style for it and we have that and gameplay coming together in UE4. I know it’s a tease, but I just can’t really say anything about it at this point.

I hope you all are staying safe and healthy in these unfortunate times. Maybe even gaming more than usual, I know I am.

That’s not much of a comfort, considering all the other problems the studio is dealing with right now, and the lack of much promotional material for this sequel is enough to put the progress in question. This is especially true when you remember how volatile the games industry is even in the best of times, and how abruptly games can be shelved.

But for the time being, we can call this good news.
