It has been four long, long years since we’ve heard anything about System Shock 3, the direct follow-up to the cult favorite System Shock 2 (which has had countless spiritual successors, including Bioshock, which is perhaps more famous at this point). After being announced, we’ve been more or less stuck in the dark as to what the game will actually be like, or contain. But while our long wait isn’t quite over, thanks to OtherSide Entertainment’s GDC 2019 keynote address, we now at least have a teaser trailer so we can taste a sample of the horror to come.
They presented this little treat during the Unity section of GDC, which probably means the game will be running on Unity. We also know that the game is being led by Warren Spector, who worked on the original system shock as well as Deus Ex, which is where he really became famous.
There’s not really much more to say, except this: SHODAN just straight-up isn’t scary when she’s fully rendered like that. There was something just way spookier about how she looked in low fidelity graphics when everything was jagged and wrong. Now she’s all… round and moving smoothly and stuff. It’s more uncomfortable than scary.
And not, like, the good kind of uncomfortable. Just normal, boring uncomfortable.
