System Shock 2, the famous first-person action horror game developed by Irrational Games and Looking Glass Studios, has been out for 18 years now, and they're still pushing updates for it. Recently, the Steam manager for NightDive Studios, the publisher of System Shock 2, released a statement on the Steam community forums listing the changes for Patch 2.46.

Aside from a list of bug fixes, some notable changes include:
  • The EXE has been renamed from Shock2.exe to SS2.exe
  • The almost completely broken 'Find Delacroix' quest is fixed
  • Some tweaks to various existing setups to make them work smoother
  • Disruption grenades now actually deadly as per their description
  • Grenade Hybrids now launch grenades from their hands instead of their abdomens
  • The starting controls now use WASD
  • The default music volume level has been lowered slightly
  • The default resolution when starting the game is now 800x600
  • The in-game UI is now set at a fixed resolution and will scale better at high (1920x1080 and above) resolutions
Being such an old game, I expect this update to break a lot of existing mods already polished out for the game. While that is always unfortunate to see someone's hard work get hindered, this is great news to hear that a game thought forgotten still gets the attention it needs from developers. I've played through the game in the past and it was a unique and unforgettable experience.

You can see the patch notes here, and you can purchase System Shock 2 on Steam for $9.99.
