In a recent interview with Inven Global, Lead Software Engineer Timothy Ford states that the hero is currently being reworked to leave her role as support in order to return as a defense class:
"We are discussing the change right now, and although we can't tell you the details of each change, we would still like to let you know it will be a fairly dramatic change. One thing we can tell you is that Symmetra will turn from a support hero to a defense hero after the remake. Our aim is to make the usage of Symmetra even more flexible from it."
Even in her current state, the reclassification feels fitting. Her abilities reinforce the idea of holding a line, a very defensive trait. She also is one of the few support heroes that cannot heal her teammates, a staple ability for support heroes.
This decision was likely made easier with the addition of multiple new support characters since the game's initial launch. Since then we've been given Ana, Moira, and Brigitte. All the while, we haven't received any new Defense heroes. This should help balance the classes out further.
