But why.

Well, this isn’t a combo I would have imagined.

Nintendo, in its ongoing quest to bring some actual value to the Labo VR Kit, has decided to add Super Smash Brothers: Ultimate to the ranks of Super Mario Odyssey and Breath of the Wild in “games that really, really don’t need a VR mode”, because starting with the launch of the 3.1 patch, you’ll be able to play the game in glorious VIRTUAL REALITY…

…kind of. Check out the video.

In truth, it’s not much of an addition. When you have VR mode activated, all you’ll really be able to do is watch a bunch of CPUs fight in a brand-new (but fairly interesting) perspective, one that will let you look around the stage and see more of the skybox that most people ignore when they’re in the middle of smashing their friends to oblivion.

It is possible to actually try fighting in this mode, but it looks like you can only fight one on one against a AI. Which… makes sense. There’s no way this mode could be competitive or even comparable to a normal match (I mean, the buttons alone are on the side of your head instead of someplace comfortable) and multiplayer would just be… well… ‘difficult’, when one of the parties had their face plastered directly in front of the screen.

That said, it’s not really an offensive addition to the game or anything, and while it might not be very impressive, at least it’s giving some value to the people who were silly enough to buy the Labo VR kit.

Patch 3.1 comes with a few other small tweaks as well, mostly balancing the fighters a little bit. Lots of buffs to up-air attacks, and Nintendo is finally making Olimar’s hitbox bigger, which should be a relief to pros.

3.1 comes out today, so don't forget to update your software.
