Super Smash Bros Ultimate and the SNK Leak: What's Going On?

We try to make as much sense of it as we can.

Confusion continues to ensue as copyright disclaimers appear, then disappear, on the Super Smash Bros Ultimate DLC character webpages. But is this a leak, or just a glitch?

Tensions have been high lately in regards to the next DLC fighter for the popular Nintendo fighting game, Super Smash Bros Ultimate. It began with a 4chan listing claiming to have insider information. The post didn't reveal who the next fighter would be, but hinted that it was a female character from an uncommon series with a ranged weapon.

Like anything on 4chan, people didn't much trust it. Vergeben, an info-leaker with a reliable history stated that the claim was fake. But the seed of doubt was already planted.

This idea grew when an Overwatch style Nintendo Switch travel case appeared on Amazon. This implied that Blizzard's hero shooter would be releasing on the console. Fans then speculated that the new fighter would be Tracer.

Now take all of that info, and throw it out the window. Because SNK has been added to the mix.

Discovered by Sabi on Twitter, the bottom of the DLC Fighter page on Nintendo's UK website includes the following disclaimer at the bottom.

©SNK CORPORATION ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

It makes perfect sense to see this as an accidental leak, implying that the next fighter would be one under the SNK umbrella of games. The company is known for Samurai Shodown, Metal Slug, and King of Fighters.

The webpage is now offline, as well. It's not clear why the entire page is removed from their website instead of simply having the text removed, but it adds to the suspicion.

But there's still too much that doesn't make sense. Various internet communities are remarking on the confusing way this information is appearing. One example is that the copyright notice does not follow the same format as the other DLC fighters, which include a much larger (and not all caps) list of copyrights. Others noticed that the copyright message is the same exact text as for other SNK games, such as the recently released SNK Heroines: New Character MissX DLC.

So what's the truth here? It's that we have no actual clue who to expect. All of these recent claims and events have been an Alice in Wonderland-style game of CHANGE PLACES and none of it makes sense.

Have patience, folks. We will know about the next fighter soon enough.
