This information came from developer Tommy Refenes in the Super Meat Boy Discord chat, which was shared via screenshot by Reddit user /u/Venomkiss. A user had asked whether the game would be coming to Steam someday, to which Refenes replied with the one-year exclusivity.
The Epic Games Store gained media attention upon its reveal for being an online store that offered better revenue sharing rates with developers than many other major markets. While beneficial for developers, it raised the question of how they expected to "win over" a consumer base. People need a reason to get yet another game store.
This decision has been negatively received by the gaming community overall. Reddit user /u/aroloki1 described their discontent well.
"They should lure users with good discounts or features. Nah, they buy exclusives instead so that if you want a game you will have no choice but use their store which does not even have a search function yet. They did not even fund these game at all, they just went to devs with nearly finished products with a pile of money to make these games exclusive if I understand the situation well."
This doesn't bode well for the platform's longevity. Until they offer something worth investing in, people will continue to prefer Steam over them.
