Super Mario Run was supposed to be a huge app for Nintendo. The game was supposed to draw in tons of fans and even build up some of the hype for the Nintendo Switch. Well, it seems to have done much more harm than good for the company, and it's honestly all Nintendo's fault. The game is available for free right now, but you can't unlock the full 21 levels unless you pay $9.99 USD. That's pretty steep for a touch game on your smartphone, but the game actually does come with quite a bit.
In the end, the amount of content that comes with the game is not worth the 10 bucks in the eyes of the consumers and Nintendo lost 5% of their shares in one day. Super Mario Run was received quite poorly by the general public and had very low ratings. Bad reviews mixed with an "overpriced" title have caused Nintendo shares to drop over 16% since the launch of the application.
Sadly, this is not Nintendo's first share drop due to phone apps. After Pokemon Go was released, Nintendo's shares went up significantly. Once people realized that Nintendo didn't actual make the game, they went right back down. It's sad to say that Nintendo can't really get a quality grasp on mobile gaming. I would love to have some great Mario games available on my phone, but the company just got a bit too greedy on this one. Being a Nintendo fan myself, I'm pretty disappointed.
While I don't think the app is absolutely horrible, it definitely could have been offered at a lower price. I understand that Nintendo feels like this is worth the 10 dollars, but you have to be realistic here. If they had just settled a bit and made the app $5 instead, I guarantee it would have done much better. Hopefully they can get into an upswing before the launch of the Switch because if they keep falling they're going to find themselves in a deep hole very quickly.
