Remember Super Mario Run? The little mobile app came out about seven months ago and was supposed to be one of the most successful apps of our time. While the game was picked up by many people right out of the gates, reviews weren't all that great. Personally, I had fun playing the game for a few days, but my enthusiasm ran thin pretty quickly.
Regardless, the game has been downloaded over 150 million times, which certainly puts it up quite high on the "most successful apps" list. Since it is a free game that offers a paid version, one real question does pop into my head. How many of those free downloads actually ended up becoming a paid download to turn a profit?
As far as those numbers go, we have no idea. Tatsumi Kimishima, Nintendo's president, has confirmed that the app was purchased by fewer than 10 percent of the people who downloaded, so we know for a fact that it hasn't sold over 15 million copies. Kimishima also said that they want to change the way players purchase the game, seeing as how they made more money from in-app purchases of their less popular title, Fire Emblem Heroes. With only 15 million downloads total, that app has brought in more revenue than Super Mario Run.
In-app purchases will be the death of me, but I guess Nintendo just wants to make some cash.
