Nintendo is making some old school throwbacks with their latest update to Super Mario Odyssey. The company's Twitter account announced two new outfits for the game, one more well known than the other.
The first outfit is fairly understandable, the Baseball Uniform and Batting Helmet. While this could be seen as a standard sports outfit. The uniform has the same blue and white colors as the Seattle Mariners, a team that Nintendo used to own. The more unexpected outfit is the Satellaview Suit and Helmet.
What even is a Satellaview? It was a physical add-on for the Super Nintendo that would allow players to download and play games via satellite connection. The product was only launched in Japan in 1995 and never spread out from there. This might be because the service was only available during certain hours of the day.
It's a fun fact by Nintendo that's been deeply buried by time. The space suit in Super Mario Odyssey is a recreation of what Mario wore during the commercial to the product (viewable below).
Sometimes I wonder if Nintendo has a resident elder, whose entire job is to recall old, forgotten tidbits about the company.
