With how easy it is to record and transmit information in this modern age, submitting new speedrun records is a quick and simple process. For this reason, combined with general competitiveness, the current record holder for speed runs changes hands quite often. This is why it's as impressive as it is for one man to hold the world record for three main Super Mario Bros. speedruns at the same time.
The speedrunner known as Kosmic (Kosmicd12) set a new record recently for the Super Mario Bros Minus Run. He credits the newfound victory to another speedrunner, who discovered a glitch that clips the player through a wall in world 1-2. This trick allowed Kosmic to achieve a final time of 2:33.587, exactly 143 milliseconds faster than the standing record, set four months ago by SoloQ.
This marks the 11th world record that Kosmic holds for the classic game title. Nine of them are category extensions, which are gimmicky challenges like playing one-handed. The other 3 are Any% (beat the game); warpless (beat the game without warping) and Minus World ending (beat the minus world).
We're reaching the point that there's little improvement that can be made on these scores. Eventually, someone will figure out the ideal method, and a quicker score simply won't be possible. Until then, Kosmic is the hat trick of Mario speed runs. Congratulations.
