Enter the Super League Gaming, a new gaming league created to cater to the recreational gamer. It will launch this summer and they're doing so in a number of major movie chains throughout cities in the United States. Their concept puts gamers in front of the big screen which is different for sure but actually sounds pretty cool. Their "Super League Gaming Summer Tour" begins in Los Angeles on June 15. In all, they'll be in 28 major metropolitan areas in over 80 movie theaters. The movie chains in question are Regal Entertainment Group, AMC Theaters, Cinemark Theatres and iPic Theaters.
This will be a first in competitive gaming as it puts the average gamer in a movie theater side by side with one another. It's stated that the first competition will involve Minecraft with others to come.
The concept will end on August 26 and then a new 6 week period of gaming competition will begin on September 14. Here's what Super League President and COO Brett Morris had to say about the league...
"Much like a baseball player has their minor or junior league, gamers now have Super League and much like a basketball player has a court, or a soccer player has a field, gamers now have theaters. We're bringing together gamers to compete and socialize with other like-minded gamers in an exciting setting."
For the initial competition involving Minecraft, a 3rd person world view will be projected onto the movie screen showing all players while each player will play on their own laptop in 1st person mode. During each 80 minute gaming session, gamers will build up their teams and compete in battles but will also enjoy free time to socialize or form strategies with others as they attempt to rank up.
Super League Co-Founder and Chief Visionary John Miller had this to say about the league as well...
"There are all kinds of leagues out there, but there's still a vast group of gamers who don't have any way of organizing themselves into recreational teams. We were just a group of dads who saw that void and thought this would be a great way to bring gaming to life. Gamers learn how to cooperate, how to develop their social skills, and work together toward a common goal over a period of time. The core concept of teamwork is still there. We're just evolving the playing field."
The cost per session to play is said to be $120 while viewing might be free, we're not yet sure. For more information on Super League Gaming check out their web site here.
