Street Fighter 5 Adds Loot Boxes 2.5 Years After Launch

Bit late to the party, aren't ya?

After the events of the last few years, You'd think developers would be avoiding loot boxes, if possible. Yet Street Fighter 5 is updating to include the feature a good 2.5 years after release.

These randomized boxes are part of Survival Mode, as well as a new game mode called Fighting Chance. Street Fighter character Menat has started up a fortune shop, where they'll read your fortune for 500 Fight Money, the in-game currency. These fortunes are given to the player as awards ranging from Battle Goods to Street Fighter art.

The times you can get in the randomized process are either cosmetic or limited to the single-player-only Survival Mode. This means that multiplayer gameplay will not be affected by this addition.

It's strange that Capcom would implement loot boxes this late in the game's life cycle, especially with the generally frowned-upon perspective the gaming community has for them. While they were dislike-but-tolerated for a good while, the exploitative nature of Star Wars Battlefront II during launch led to widespread outrage.

Either way, if the fans are happy, does it much matter?
