PUBG has been playing catch-up with Fortnite’s Battle Royale mode for the past couple of months, and a lot of good has actually come from their little competition. In an effort to be a worthy rival, they’ve really improved the game’s latency and performance, they’ve added new temporary modes, and they even added new maps, including the super-tight jungle map, Sanhok, which is perfect for high-octane up-close-and-personal action.
But this jungle island houses a secret that Redditor ‘godlyfury’ seems to have discovered, which was then reported by Kotaku: scattered throughout the map, hidden in out of the way locations, are a number of small golden chests.
Now, these golden chests cannot be opened or even interacted with, so they’re not actually valuable to find out in your adventure, but it is worth noting that in Fortnite, golden chests are also spread throughout the map, although these can be opened up to give you premier loot to give you an edge against your opponents.
What could it be? There are two basic theories right now: either it’s just a simple Easter egg, a nod towards Fortnite that would be a lot more charming if they weren’t crushing PUBG in just about every respect, or, perhaps more likely, they’re a clue to something that’s going to happen sometime in the future. Will the chests be able to be opened one day (with, say, a purchasable key)? Is a new mode going to arrive that uses golden chests prominently? Is this a sign that we’re going to get the Fortnite/PUBG crossover that literally nobody was asking for?
All of those are technically possibilities.
Regardless, it’s not like PUBG to leave these kinds of Easter eggs in-game, so this is worth whatever raised eyebrows you may or may not have. We’ll just have to see if more comes from it.
