In a recent Podcast interview with IGN, Undead Labs CEO Jeff Strain said that he would love to include Multiplayer within State of Decay but Undead Labs decided not to include it due to the possiblity that it would adversely affect Gameplay. He states;
"We could go retrofit cooperative multiplay into State of Decay," he says of the possibility. "It would feel janky. it would not feel like it was a native part of the experience."
He went on to further explain that it would be like bandaiding the Multiplayer in and changing the existing code would be too difficult. He states;
"There's no question that State of Decay screams out for cooperative play, I feel it every time I play it, everybody feels it every time they play it...you just want to have that experience with your friends. When that day comes, when we do that, we want it to feel like it's the heart of the experience, and not something that's grafted in."
It is a little odd that they are making these statements now as if they are brand new when in reality they have said the same thing in the past prior to said "new iterations" of the game, see here.
But maybe there is a future, perhaps a State of Decay 2 with multiplayer? Strain goes into more detail with this statement;
"State of Decay...it's just a single-player game, but it is very much a proving ground for the experience that we would like to carry forward as we look at the future of State of Decay," he said. "But one thing I can tell you is that that future very much has multiplayer at its heart."
So there you have it, no Multiplayer for State of Decay for the PC, Xbox 360 nor Xbox One. That makes me feel like this dude...
You can get your hands on State of Decay Year One Survival Edition for the Xbox One on April 28, 2015.
