Stardew Valley's Wii U Release Canceled, Switched to Switch

The first of many times I'll make that pun.

Stardew Valley, indie darling from the start of the year, has been a smash hit on the PC, and not just because there are mods that make it more like Undertale. It’s a cute, funny, insanely charming indie take on the famous Harvest Moon formula, combining farming, relationship management, and dungeon crawling in a seamless, customizable experience. So of course, it’s only a matter of time before the game will find its way to consoles.

We already know when the Xbox One and PS4 port of the game will roll around: It’ll be released for the PS4 in North America come December 14th, and it will get a worldwide PS4 release and a Xbox One global release the next day. Perfect.

...except, you know, there's one missing console: the Wii U. When will it be released for Nintendo’s current console?

Short answer – never. But there’s a very good reason for that, as explained in a recent blog post:

Stardew Valley will not be coming to the Wii U, however. Looking at Wii U and the current gaming landscape, we made the difficult choice to shift our development efforts to creating a version for Nintendo Switch. I am really looking forward to the Switch, and I believe that the Switch’s unique capabilities could create some exciting opportunities for Stardew Valley. I do want to emphasize that I am absolutely committed to seeing Stardew Valley on Nintendo platforms, and I really do appreciate your support and understanding in this.

Makes sense. Why would they waste their time developing for a console that has technically stopped being developed? It’s more efficient to wait for the Switch, even if it means the Nintendo launch will be postponed for at least a few months. Nintendo’s new console doesn’t roll around until March of next year, so we can expect to re-visit Stardew valley on the switch either around then, or sometime after.

Until then, play it on the PC. Or don't play it.  Whatever you'd prefer.
