Stardew Valley is getting a multiplayer mode very soon. The update was announced a little while ago, but new information has been released. For starters, the beta is expected to begin around the end of 2017, which isn't too far away. A ton of work has been put into this by Chucklefish. They said that the majority of the work is done, but they had to tweak almost every single source file and rewrite 15,000 lines of code.
Adding multiplayer to a game like this is no easy task. Once multiplayer hits, a carpenter by the name of Robin will appear on the farm to put up three new cabins. Each of these cabins can hold a friend, allowing them to live on your farm as well. If you are not online, your friends can still get on, do what needs to be done, and play their style of game. You will each have unique inventories, but will be able to trade items around and use chests together.
Finally, you'll be given the opportunity to marry one of your friends. It's a very interesting feature and I'm curious to see how it plays out. I certainly won't be marrying any of my friends, so I'll have to watch a video I guess. All of this is coming to you very soon, so just hang tight and wait a few more months.
