Starbound, the sci-fi version of Terraria, the 2D version of Minecraft, first came to PC’s in 2013 via early access after a successful kickstarter campaign, and went on to get released officially last year, with ports to the PS4, PS Vita, and Xbox One on their way. But like all the best developers, developer Chucklefish games wasn’t finished with the game just because the beta was over: they released a huge free update late last year which added a host of new tweaks, items, and features to the game, and now, they’re looking to do it again, in part to celebrate hitting a massive sales milestone: 2.5 million copies!

2016 was really huge for us! In July, we finally released Starbound 1.0 after five years of development. Over the Christmas break, we hit another milestone – we’ve sold over 2.5 million copies of Starbound! I’m trying to visualize a crowd of two and a half million people, but I’m struggling…

Every patch we see loads of comments from the community about what they love about the game and what they want to see more of. This patch, we’re working on fleshing out a part of the game that’s exciting to a lot of us in the office, as well as a lot of you out there: space! We’ve got lots of big plans for this update, but here’s a little preview showing some of what we’ve got in the works.

Looks pretty exciting, but not as exciting as knowing that this is becoming a kind of trend in the gaming world: free updates! I’m not sure if this means there’ll never be Starbound DLC, but even if not, it’s encouraging to see. Keep it up, fellas—this might be worth popping my copy of Starbound back up again. That mega-base of mine isn’t going to make itself, after all.
