Announced on the Star Wars website, Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge (TftGE from here forward) is a new virtual reality "experience" in development by ILMxLAB and Oculus Studios.
Described as an action-adventure experience, TftGE takes place between Episode 8 and 9 of the films. Set in the outskirts of Batuu's Black Spire Outpost, the game plays into the world of Galaxy's Edge, the real-world theme park in Disney Land and Disney World USA. They describe the game as a mixture of different gameplay types, making it somewhat unclear what to expect. Though with them avoiding the word "game", we can likely expect a more narrative experience than anything. They also mention that there will be characters "both new and iconic characters from the Star Wars galaxy."
The rich storytelling in Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge has redefined what a Disney park experience can be, and we are thrilled fans will have an opportunity to discover new stories, meet new characters and explore new regions of the planet Batuu in Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge, said Scott Trowbridge, Walt Disney Imagineering creative executive. Now our guests can immerse themselves in these stories both inside and outside our parks.
Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy's Edge will be available sometime later this year. Further details are unknown at this time. Since it's in partnership with Oculus, we can assume that the game will be exclusive to Oculus VR systems.
